Close Call
Oil on Masonite
32"x52"
2008

My normal route to work includes crossing some train tracks. This particular day I managed to avoid getting hit by a train by maybe 5 seconds or so. I bent down and took this shot with my camera phone to commemorate the incident.

Waste Not
Gouache on Canvas
30" x 30"
2007

I was taking out the trash at work and was surprised (well, not really) to find 3 baby raccoons sleeping in a near-by dumpster. There are a few raccoons that frequent the area, so I was wondering why their mother left them in such an odd place. Then it dawned on me that this is their natural habitat. People have invaded their world and so the raccoon has made this new environment their own. I feared my presence was delaying their reunion with the mother so I quickly left. When I returned 15 minutes later, they were gone. I just remember them looking up at me, curiously and nervously, not wanting to be bothered.
I painted many different kinds of recyclable materials, mainly bottles and cups from various well known companies in this dumpster. There's a pop can, a coffee cup, an empty bottle of water, a juice container and a 'to-go' cup from a fast food store. My hope is that people can see and realize the importance of maintaining a balance with nature and that it's the small things that often go unrecognized in our daily environment. Small things like baby raccoons and pop cans.
Animals are not waste.
