Introductions

My name is Mike Valcourt and I'm an artist.

It's taken me a long time to come to terms with that statement. I mean, how do you disprove someone who says, "I'm an artist." Obviously you can't, because art is subjective.

I've seen many different forms of art but really what makes it art? I think it has something to do with communication. Making ideas come to life is what I'm all about. I view my artwork as a tool, a means of communication between the original idea come to life in which ever fashion it manifests itself, and the viewer. In this way, I transcend most preconceived notions about what art should be. Art isn't just simply putting dabs of paint on paper and making it pretty, that is so limiting. I've struggled with being too 'universal' in my early years only to realize that it's what I have to say as an artist that really matters.

Alright, first off I've been wondering what to call myself and my web site. How do I promote myself, what type of identity do I brand myself with and how do I want to be perceived? Seeing as though most of my artwork is in a static form of media, i.e. walls, canvases and such, I could combine that with the fact that I've been formally trained as a graphic designer. I had this idea in my head for some time, and I love it, so I figured I would try it out.

I've been painting on a professional level for just over 10 years. For the most part, I'm self taught, but I have a lot to owe to other artist for their help and mentorship.

Please feel free to contact me with your questions or comments, I'd love to hear from you.
